The BikeTag Story 🎥

A documentary about the people, cities, and moments behind the game.

BikeTag has been played on streets, trails, and internet forums since at least 2007 when a rider in Minneapolis/St. Paul posted a photo to a local cycling forum and challenged others to find the spot.

“This has been done many times on other forums… I thought it might be fun here.”

It was. And it spread.

From motorcycles to bicycles, from forums to Facebook to Discord, from Minneapolis to Portland and beyond; BikeTag has evolved into a global, community-driven game of exploration and connection.

Now we’re telling that story.

Not just the story of the website.
Not just the story of one city.
But the bigger story of how a simple photo game built friendships, changed how people see their cities, and inspired thousands of small adventures.

We want to hear from you

Whether you’ve played once or a hundred times, whether your game lives on Discord, Facebook, or a physical bulletin board; this project is for everyone who’s ever been part of BikeTag.

We’re looking for:

  • Stories — a favorite tag, a wild ride, a meaningful memory
  • Photos and videos — from gameplay or behind the scenes
  • People to interview — casually, remotely, or in person
  • Volunteers — editors, designers, storytellers, producers, musicians

You don’t need to be a filmmaker.
You just need to have something real to say.

We’ll follow up with next steps; whether that’s a conversation, a media drop, or a chance to help shape the final film.

A community-made documentary

This isn’t a polished corporate thing.
It’s DIY. It’s weird. It’s collective.
Just like BikeTag.

Help us tell the story the way it deserves to be told – by the people who’ve lived it.
